ABOUT ME

“Deru kui wa utareru.” In English it means, “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.” My name is Yuriko Shibata, and I want to be a nail that sticks out.

My interest in music began with classical piano lessons when I was only three. By the time I was in elementary school, I could play on the piano any song that I had heard, such as themes of video games and Japanese animes without music sheets. I was musically influenced by Christianity in my high school where I have played the pipe organ and sung hymns everyday on weekdays.

In 2018, I graduated from Tokyo College of Music and received a bachelor's degree in music, major in Movie and Broadcasting Composition. And on September, I commence my two-year program in Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at the prestigious NYU Tisch School of the Arts, in New York, USA.

My ultimate goal is to become a  “glocal” artist – that is “global” and “local” – to represent a unique culture and tradition of Japan to the world through my work as a composer.  Also, I do not aim to be just any glocal artist, but specifically as glocal collaborative artist because I get to be a nail that sticks out in contributing my unique style and skills, while working with other artists with different strengths, that are, in effect, like nails that surround me. Then, it is hard to hammer me down.
